The Importance of Treating Mental Health in Addiction Treatment Programs
When individuals enter addiction treatment, addressing only substance use without treating co-occurring mental health disorders is like treating half the problem. The connection between mental health and addiction is undeniable, making integrated treatment not just beneficial but essential for lasting recovery.
The statistics paint a clear picture: according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 23.4% of adults, approximately 61.5 million people, experienced any mental illness in 2024, while 17.1% of the U.S. population aged 12 or older met criteria for substance use disorder. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reveals that people with substance use disorders often have other mental disorders, and those with mental disorders are at higher risk of developing substance use problems. In fact, individuals with mood or anxiety disorders are approximately twice as likely to also suffer from addiction.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), integrated care that combines mental health and substance use treatment leads to better health outcomes. When treatment programs screen for and address co-occurring conditions simultaneously, individuals have a significantly greater chance at maintaining long-term sobriety. As discussed in our blog post about setting clients up for success, structured discharge planning that includes ongoing mental health support is critical for preventing relapse.
The path to recovery requires addressing both the addiction and the mental health challenges that often accompany it, anything less leaves individuals vulnerable to relapse and continued suffering.
