Family Program
What is CRAFT?
How CRAFT Works
CRAFT addresses three primary goals according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information: engaging the identified treatment-resistant person in treatment, reducing their substance use, and improving the concerned significant other’s mood and functioning. The program typically involves meeting once per week for 10-12 weeks with a trained CRAFT professional who guides participants through strategies for more positive interactions with someone struggling with a substance use disorder.
The methodology includes functional analysis to identify substance use patterns, contingency management training to reinforce positive sober behaviors, communication skills training, treatment entry training, and self care for family members. Using the CRAFT approach, the person with addiction seeks treatment at a rate of about 65-75%, which is 2-3 times higher than interventions or 12-step approaches, according to the Partnership to End Addiction.
The Proven Benefits of Family Programming
The statistical evidence supporting family involvement is compelling. Clients who indicated that they had support from their families had completion rates of 77.3 percent, whereas those who did not have family support had a completion rate of only 45.5 percent, according to University of Washington research. This 32-percentage-point difference represents a statistically significant impact on recovery outcomes. Importantly, research shows that CRAFT participants reported lower levels of anger, anxiety, and depression after joining the program, independent of whether or not their loved one gets help. These improvements in family member wellbeing occur regardless of the identified patient’s treatment entry, making CRAFT valuable even when the person struggling with addiction isn’t yet ready for change.
CRAFT at Soulful Recovery
At Soulful Recovery, we’ve integrated CRAFT family programming as a cornerstone of our comprehensive treatment approach because we recognize that addiction affects entire family systems. While CRAFT isn’t mandatory in our program, we strongly encourage all of our client’s families to participate when clinically appropriate. This enables families participating in our program to learn to identify triggers, communicate effectively without confrontation, and reinforce healthy behaviors through positive methods rather than punishment.
The science is clear: families who are honest, supportive of addiction treatment, provide emotional support, and maintain consistent presence significantly enhance their loved one’s chances of sustained recovery. Through CRAFT, Soulful Recovery helps families transform from feeling helpless to becoming powerful allies in the recovery process. Family programming isn’t just an addition to treatment, it’s a critical component proven to dramatically improve outcomes from initial engagement through long term sustained recovery.
