Clinical Treatment Approaches
Types of Therapy
Firstly, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is well documented as a beneficial treatment modality in itself and in conjunction with other therapy. CBT skills help people change their perspective and behaviors through recognizing patterns of thoughts and emotions. It is most effective for people with anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, depression and marital problems.
Secondly, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) helps people address and overcome conflicting interpersonal ideologies. It incorporates emotional regulation, distress tolerance, healthy communication practices and mindfulness based activities. DBT is proven to help people afflicted with suicidal ideation, personality disorders, addiction, and relationship problems.
Thirdly, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that helps people work through their traumatic experiences. EMDR is proven to be effective for people who struggle with PTSD, Complex PTSD, anxiety and other mental health disorders. This therapy works by asking patients to recall their experiences while performing bilateral stimuli such as tapping the sides of one’s body or moving one eyes rapidly back and forth. By reliving one’s experiences in a safe environment, patients are able to slowly alter their body sensations, images and thoughts that come with their traumatic experiences.
Lastly, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapy that stems from CBT. The goal is to help patients decrease avoidance and struggles associated with difficult emotions. The intention is to help clients learn that deeper emotions are sometimes an appropriate response to situations and should not prevent them from moving on in their life.
